Collection History

The founder of the collection, Peer Frost 1910 – 84, a native of Denmark, was educated as an organist and later bandleader before he established himself as a music publisher.

The interest of original and unspoiled expression led in the late sixties and early seventies to numerous journeys to the African continent creating a web of contacts in the rural districts. These were based on personal and mutual confidence, and were chosen by him, in exchange of wanted commodities giving status to the vendor, usually a tribal chief, like radios, television or even motorcars. Goods were shipped from western Africa to Belgium.

Over time contacts were established and couriers came from time to time bringing items in their luggage. A serious traffic accident of one of the couriers, who was without insurance, was taken care of by Peer Frost financially and socially and contributed substantially in mutual confidence.

Due to his domicile in Brussels, access to important auctions and collectors here and in Paris was easy, allowing him to improve his collection by exchange or buying and selling in the pursuit of originality and artistic expression.

His aim was to exhibit and spread public knowledge of the African tribal art and the impact on our society. Unfortunately he did not fully realise this idea, because of his sudden death in 1984, leaving the collection to his children.
